The answers we seek our just outside our reach.
Astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) travels to the outer edges of the solar system to find his missing father and unravel a mystery that threatens the survival of our planet. His journey will uncover secrets that challenge the nature of human existence and our place in the cosmos.
This looks like it’s set to be an excellent Sci-Fi thriller set in space, though part of me is erring on the side of caution..
In the trailer we see Brad Pitt successfully following in the footsteps of his father, Tommy Lee Jones. His father just happens to also have been in charge of some secret mission that’s suddenly relevant, and Pitt is tasked with heading deep into space to find his father. Narratively speaking, that all just seems very convenient and I worry that the father/son relationship is thrown in there purely for forced emotional tension like a lot of hollywood blockbusters tend to do, and may ultimately distract from the story rather than add to it.
But if I put those concerns aside, what’s left looks like it could be a very good film. Alongside some superb-looking action scenes and visual effects, it appears as though there’s some form of mystery to unravel. I do like that the technology looks very close to NASA’s current designs, setting the movie not too far in the future, and judging from the synopsis I’m pretty sure that they’re hoping that this will be the next Interstellar.
And if it turns out that it is, then that’s not a bad thing.
