Batwoman

Series Premiere

Kate Kane, armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city's criminal resurgence. But don't call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham's symbol of hope.

With Arrow ending, it’s great to have another series to fill the void. I enjoyed Batwoman’s earlier appearance in Elseworlds; the fifth Arrowverse crossover event from last year.

This year’s crossover event – Crisis on Infinite Earths – isn’t set to include either Batwoman nor the Legends of Tomorrow (mostly because the character roster is too large now). However Legends showrunner Phil Klemmer hinted that the Legends will be having their own crossover with Batwoman at some point instead. We’re still waiting for season 5 to be greenlit, so either that announcement has been delayed or they could even end up being the guest stars in Batwoman?

This series will be the first live-action scripted drama series with a lesbian superhero. The character is being played by actor Ruby Rose, who is also part of the LGBTQ+ community; this is a perfect casting choice and a fantastic example of proper representation.

Judging from the trailer, the show will likely start off as an origin story, as it appears to take place prior to the events in the last crossover. I like the take that she’s mistaken for Batman (who’s been missing for a few years) but doesn’t want him getting all the credit “for a woman’s work”.

The character is also still relatively new in the DC mythos, having only been introduced back in DC’s limited series 52 back in 2006. As a result I’m not at all familiar with the character beyond what we saw in Elseworlds, but being able to see what she’s about is going to be great and should open up more possibilities for an ever-expanding Arrowverse.

There’s no official date announced yet other than it will air on Sundays “this fall”. So until we get official confirmation I’m temporarily taking an educated guess at October 6th.
