A monster called… Morbius!
Biochemist Michael Morbius tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease, but he inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism instead.
Following on from Venom, this is Sony’s second film in their universe of Marvel characters.
To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever even heard of Morbius until I saw the release announcement. In the comics he appeared as an antagonist of Spider-Man and apparently was also visible in a deleted scene of the first Blade movie (although it’s been so long since I’ve seen the DVD extras that I can’t really recall it).
But unlike vampires who are naturally born or turned by other vampires, he’s a scientist who becomes one through the wonders of science experiments gone wrong, which admittedly is an interesting take. He suffers some of their weaknesses like burning in the sun, but apparently doesn’t succumb to the usual things like garlic or crosses, etc.
Jared Leto is playing the titular role with Doctor Who’s Matt Smith playing one of the villains.
It has potential to be good, but it’s also Sony attempting to use the Marvel licence on their own, so we’ll see.
